De Hallen in Haarlem presenteert deze zomer de expositie ‘Onvergetelijke Vrouwen’ met vijftig glamourfoto’s van filmsterren uit de vorige eeuw.

Onder hen diva’s als Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich en Ginger Rogers, maar uit het Spaarnestad Fotoarchief zijn ook publiciteitsfoto’s van vergeten sterren als Dolores del Rio, Anita Page, Dorothy Larmour en Betty Grable geselecteerd. Veel foto’s dateren uit de jaren dertig, toen nieuwe technologische ontwikkelingen met lenzen, retouche en elektrisch licht fotografen in staat stelden van de filmsterren godinnen en halfgodinnen te maken.

De Hallen presenteert tegelijk de expositie ‘Blik op vrouwen’ met recent aangekochte vrouwenportretten van onder anderen Koos Breukel, Céline van Balen en Dana Lixenberg. Beide tentoonstellingen duren van zaterdag 25 juni tot en met zondag 11 september.

In de perstent in Emmen kijken de dames van de koffie haast spottend toe. Ze zeggen het niet, maar je ziet het ze denken: wat een poespas allemaal. En €1,50 voor een bakje koffie. „Zo ontvang je toch geen buitenlandse gasten“, klaagt een Nederlandse fotograaf. De dames knikken begripvol, maar ja: de FIFA hè.

In Enschede wordt de boel geleid door een streberige jongeman uit Los Angeles. Hij voert zijn commando’s uit alsof de wereldvrede afhangt van zijn beslissingen. Als de fotografen voor de wedstrijden hun teamplaatjes schieten, heeft hij zijn vingers in de lucht en telt hij af. Vijf, vier, drie...

De fotograaf die bij nul pas zijn toestel in orde heeft, heeft pech gehad. Regels zijn regels. Pas als de fotografen naar hun plek zijn verwezen – waar ze tijdens de wedstrijd ook niet meer vanaf mogen – kan het duel beginnen.

In verband met een (ongetwijfeld lucratieve) overeenkomst met SonyEricsson heeft fotograaf Martin Parr zijn naam en gezicht verbonden aan een reclamecampagne voor de SonyEricsson K750, een mobiele telefoon met ingebouwde 2MP-camera.

Op de betreffende website van SonyEricsson geeft hij zelfs fotografie-tips en zijn foto's van zijn hand te bekijken.

Dus wees niet verbaasd als u hem komende week in Amsterdam met deze Japanse gadgetphone ziet experimenteren.

Hachette Filipacchi Photos (HFP) has closed the beleaguered Independent Photographers Group (IPG) and sold Katz and the K2 portraiture agency to London's Camera Press in a move that marks the French company's withdrawal from the U.K. picture market.

IPG's troubles had been mounting for years, compounded by the shrinking market for its brand of black and white reportage. Nearly a dozen staff members and photographers left the agency over the past year, some of which cited dissatisfaction with HFP's management and its inability to deliver on a long-held promise to build a Web site for the agency.

Several award-winning photographers left over the past year, including Tom Stoddart, Marcus Bleasdale, Felicia Webb, Harry Borden, David Modell and Alastair Thain. Several other support staff walked out or were laid off; two joined Getty Images and two formed their own agency.

Jay DeFoore, currently news editor at Photo District News, has been named Online Editor at E&P, and will take on his new duties on July 5.

As a reporter and news editor for three years at PDN--like E&P, owned by VNU--DeFoore has covered newspapers, photojournalism, magazines, and advertising, among other subjects. He has posted much of the news content at pdnonline.com and contributed to the publication's blog aimed at college students.

Eastman Kodak Co. said Wednesday it will discontinue production of black-and-white film paper for the professional market by the end of the year as its transition continues to digital photography.

Kodak spokesman David Lanzillo said the paper, used by studio and professional photographers to make prints, is produced at facilities in Rochester and Brazil. The company will continue to make black-and-white film and chemicals for processing.

Lanzillo said he could not specify how many employees will be affected, but the decision is part of the previously announced reduction of 12,000 to 15,000 workers worldwide by 2007. That is expected to leave the photography giant with a global work force of about 50,000.

Demand for black-and-white paper is declining 25 percent annually as the imaging industry transitions from film to digital, Lanzillo said.

"It's a shame to see it go," said Bill Schiffner, editor of Imaging Business magazine in Melville, New York. "Digital has done a lot of good things for the industry but it's done some bad things too. It's making a lot of these processes obsolete."

The paper is manufactured at a plant in Brazil. Kodak declined to specify how many employees would be affected by the production shutdown, which is part of a three-year overhaul to eliminate 12,000 to 15,000 jobs by 2007 and shrink the company's work force to around 50,000.

John Eoff, owner of Photo-Lab Inc, said his 91-year-old shop in Schenectady, New York, still sells "a fair amount" of black-and-white paper to photography students and enthusiasts, while professional photographers have mostly gone to digital printing systems already.

Kodak in April reported a first-quarter loss of $142 million because of a steady slide in revenues from film and other chemical-based businesses and higher-than-expected costs to cover steep job cuts.

The company grew into an icon on the strength of its traditional film, paper and photofinishing businesses. It is now betting its future in digital terrain - from cameras, inkjet paper and online photofinishing to photo kiosks and minilabs, X-ray systems and commercial printers.

Hoe ver mogen de paparazzi in Nederland eigenlijk gaan? In Amerika en Engeland liggen de fotografen rustig een week voor de deur bij een celeb. Dé coverfoto voor een tijdschrift is daar, in tegenstelling tot in ons nuchtere landje, immers tienduizenden euro's waard. Voor wat duw- en trekwerk deinst men dus niet terug en zelfs het binnendringen van privé-domeinen behoort tot de mogelijkheden...

Ondanks het feit dat het in Nederland doorgaans allemaal nog wel mee lijkt te vallen, riep Karin Bloemen onlangs een stichting in het leven. Met als doel het beschermen van de privacy van bekende Nederlanders. In de Telegraaf licht La Bloemen haar actie toe.

In de New York Times vandaag een artikel over de nieuwe Nikon DSLR, de D50, en zijn geschiktheid voor amateurfotografen. Ook wordt deze camera vergeleken met de Nikon D70s en de Canon EOS 350D.

(Waarom vindt u nooit een dergelijk artikel in de Volkskrant? Omdat de redactie van die krant bevolkt wordt door Canon-zeloten, die in hun blinde aanbidding voor dat merk opvallende gelijkenis vertonen met Michael Jackson-fans.)

De Amerikaanse radiozender NPR (National Public Radio) zond een korte reportage uit over de opleiding van fotografen in het naoorlogse Afghanistan.

Microsoft has today made their RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer PowerToy available for download. This utility provides for viewing of Canon RAW and Nikon NEF files as well as TIFF images and other standard image formats (BMP, GIF, PNG, JPEG etc.). The utility is split into a Windows XP shell extension which provides preview / edit / print commands for RAW files as well as a RAW viewer application.

Aanstaande woensdag bij de VPRO het programma "Mijn Amsterdam - Ed van der Elsken", met daarin de films "Welkom in het leven lieve kleine" (1963) en "Een fotograaf filmt Amsterdam" (1983), alsmede twee korte scenes van voorbijgangers in Amsterdam uit 1972. Op zondag 26 juni wordt bij RAM de documentaire van Walter Stokman herhaald, een film n.a.v. de tentoonstelling "Mijn Amsterdam" van Ed van der Elsken in FOAM.

In de loop van de zomer zendt de VPRO een selectie van ca 20 korte films uit (variërend van 2 tot 5 minuten) met Amsterdam-materiaal van en over Ed van der Elsken.

Binnenkort komt er ook een DVD uit met acht films van van der Elsken, die bij de VPRO besteld zal kunnen worden. Daarnaast wordt een catalogus van de tentoonstelling in FOAM uitgebracht.

Een aantal buitenlandse journalisten is naar de residentie van oppositieleider Shawel getogen. Een in burger geklede veiligheidsagent probeert tevergeefs te voorkomen dat zij foto’s maken. Als hij besluit versterking in te roepen, loopt het al snel uit de hand. Een fotograaf wordt een paar keer vol in het gezicht gestompt. Een cameraman krijgt stokslagen. In het tumult verliest een politieagent alle controle over zichzelf. Hij zet zijn kalasjnikov op scherp en dreigt de journalisten neer te schieten. Alle apparatuur wordt in beslag genomen.

Fotojournalist Jeroen Kramer heeft een contract als "contributing photographer" getekend bij Getty Images News, en is in die hoedanigheid dezer dagen aan het werk in het Midden-Oosten. Kortgeleden maakte hij voor Getty Images al een reeks portretten van de Libanese politicus Saadeddin Hariri (zoon van de vermoorde Rafiq Hariri) in verband met de verkiezingen in Libanon.

The 2nd issue of M magazine features work by 17 Magnum photographers that explore the concept of REPETITION in opposition to the “decisive moment”.

The process of repetition can reveal a construction, for instance the symbolic disappearance of Saddam Hussein’s portrait in the series Vanishing Saddam by Abbas, a critical statement such as the political theater in One Vote by Alex Majoli, or sometimes even a narrative like America in mourning in Paul Fusco’s Funeral Train. Repetition is multiple. It functions as the specific rule of the game in each series. It is above all formal: a leitmotiv, a composition, a distance; identical. But it can also be a systematic approach to the subject: Jumpology by Philippe Halsman, a commentary along portraits in Rich and Poor by Jim Goldberg. It can also be of an invisible nature, the photographer's recurring obsession, such as Raymond Depardon's “lost moments” in Errance. The use of a repetitive process is not always a premeditated decision; it sometimes imposes itself in a revealing way like Senator Fred Harris's electoral handshaking by Richard Kalvar. From one work to another, REPETITION is a concept as much as an intuition, a conscious choice as much as inverting a restrictive: it is the expression of debts as as part of the creative process.
